The Blue Devils receive the accolade after a 79-65 conference win over the Pitt Panthers (13-8) and a 77-68 win at Big East opponent, the St. John's Red Storm (13-7). Against Pittsburgh, Duke played good team basketball with five assists by freshman big man, 6-foot 11-inch Jahlil Okafor.
The victory at Madison Square Garden against the Red Storm fittingly made Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski the first Division I men's coach to reach 1,000 wins.
"To do it here (Madison Square Garden), just to win here, to win the 1,000th, you got to be a lucky guy," said Krzyzewski post game. "Again I like my place Cameron, but this is a magical place. We beat a really good team and a storied program."
The historic game at the Garden was close with St. John's leading as late as 5:41 in the second half. ACC Co-Rookie of the Week, Tyus Jones, helped lead Duke in the comeback with 11 points during the final 8:30 while the Blue Devils ended the game with a 26-7 run. Jones averaged 22 points, three rebounds and five assists in the two games against Pittsburgh and St. John's.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (20-2) are runner-up following two road conference wins, 85-60 at the Virginia Tech Hokies (9-11) and 81-78 in overtime at the NC State Wolfpack (13-9). Notre Dame defeated Duke recently on January 28, after the TOW vote was conducted.
