The No. 2 Cavaliers earned the acknowledgement with a lopsided 70-34 win at the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (13-16) and a 69-57 victory against the Virginia Tech Hokies (10-20). Virginia is now 14-1 in ACC play.
The Cavs defense smothered the Demon Deacons, holding them to just 21.8 percent shooting. Forwards junior Anthony Gill and senior Darion Atkins were Virginia’s leading scorers with 11 and 10 respectively.
“Tonight, it was their weak point that they really couldn't guard us in the post and we definitely took advantage of it,” said Atkins post game at Wake Forest.
Virginia pulled away from Tech in the second half after a low-scoring tight first 28-24. The Cavaliers defeated the Hokies behind another strong performance by Gill (16 points); junior guard Malcolm Brogdon was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Atkins also scored 16.
The Louisville Cardinals (23-6) are the runner-up for Team of the Week. The Cardinals tallied two conference road wins, 52-51 at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackers (12-18) and 81-59 at the Florida State Seminoles (15-15).
